About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Wilmette, Illinois, Akai Hana Restaurant offers an authentic and satisfying Japanese dining experience with a focus on fresh, flavorful sushi and classic Japanese dishes. Celebrated for over 30 years, this local favorite specializes not only in sushi but also in a diverse menu that highlights sushi sashimi combinations, tempura delights, and comforting bowls of udon and ramen.

The culinary offerings at Akai Hana are thoughtfully crafted to appeal to both sushi aficionados and those new to Japanese cuisine. Popular dishes such as the Sushi Sashimi Combination and the Hana Box Lunch Set are perfect examples of their expert preparation, boasting vivid, fresh-cut fish with a delicate balance of natural sweetness and umami. Whether indulging in the crispy Green Bean Tempura Roll or savoring the tender Chicken Teriyaki White Meat Dinner, each bite takes you on a tasteful journey through Japanese flavors.

For lunch, Akai Hana excels with reasonably priced set menus like the Lunch Hana Set and a variety of maki rolls, including the tempting Philadelphia Roll with smoked salmon and cream cheese or the Spicy Shrimp Tempura Roll packed with crunch and a kick of heat. The kitchen’s devotion to tradition shines especially in dishes like the Fish Shioyaki Saba Dinner, presenting broiled mackerel with simple salt seasoning, underscoring the quality of their ingredients.

The environment at Akai Hana leans toward a straightforward, no-frills style that emphasizes good food over flashy decor. While some might find the ambiance modest or reminiscent of a casual cafe rather than a high-end sushi bar, this unpretentious setting can be comforting—a spot where the focus remains firmly on the meal itself.

Customers consistently highlight the freshness and overall quality of the food, with loyal patrons returning over many years. For instance, a long-time guest shared how returning after 17 years exceeded expectations in taste and service, while others appreciate the attentive hospitality, like server CJ’s exceptional care during busy nights. Though some recent feedback mentions occasional saltiness and slightly diminished sushi freshness post-pandemic, the majority agree that Akai Hana maintains its status as a trusted destination for reliable Japanese cuisine at fair prices.

The restaurant also invites diners to round off their meal with traditional treats such as Mochi Ice Cream or a glass of Just Plum Wine, providing a sweet, satisfying finish. All in all, Akai Hana is a dependable choice for those seeking classic Japanese dishes served with friendly, prompt service and a focus on authentic flavors that honor decades of culinary tradition in Wilmette.

Still pretty good food but quite salty this time around. The kitchen has had a lot of turnovers in the last 25 years but post pandemic the flavorings and freshness of the sushi is a bit less than ideal.

The food is very good with good service. It is a little pricey but fortunately they have combo meals that are decent in prices. The portions are a little small but okay for lunch. Overall it's good. Recommended.

Went for Mother’s Day lunch. I haven’t been to Akai Hana for 17 years so was nervous if the quality and service was still the same. Since it was lunch, we all got the set menu items (bento and sushi set) along with some rolls. We were all very happy with our meals. Tasted really good, price was reasonable and the service was quick. Will definitely come back to try other items. It says a lot about a restaurant that can stay open for so many years, even thru a pandemic

Akai Hana has been in business for over 30 years, and the steady traffic means the sushi is fresh and safe, offered at a good price. However, the ambiance is lacking, with an outdated, cafeteria-like vibe and cheap-looking menus. It’s a solid spot for a quick, no-frills sushi meal, but not the place for a special dining experience.

Akai Hana has been my go to Japanese restaurant since my family brought me here for the first time. Recently brought my girlfriend here for her first time and our server CJ treated us with the highest level of hospitality. CJ was very kind and considerate of our time especially on a busy night; and the food was delicious as always!!

The restaurant is on a good location with a large parking lot. I ordered a sushi deluxe special, which was really good. The other items in the menu looked great as well. For me personally, the customer service was not good and my server was not so helpful. The prices look reasonable.
